Who is PLAYY?
To those who aren’t in the know, Playy may be a relative newcomer. But, in fact, this is a rapper whose talent you’ve been hearing on the radio for a long time. It was Playy who wrote the hook for the smash My Chick Bad, recorded by Ludacris and featuring Nicki Minaj, which hit the #2 spot on the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop charts and, in 2011, was nominated for a Grammy award for Best Rap Performance. You only need to look at the list of credits on the musical resume of this 25-year-old Houston, Texas, native to know that he is on a level unmatched by his peers. Other credits include a hit feature with Twista (“I Do”) and appearance and songwriting credits for songstress Kelly Rowland. Not only can Playy rap and write in his own right, but his catchy hooks continue to be in demand by major artists who want their songs kept in heavy rotation.
From an early age, success in the music business became Playy’s main goal and it quickly became obvious that he possessed the talent and ability to go all the way to the top as an artist. As a teenager, he would sneak out with his father – against his mother’s wishes – to perform at showcases in Atlanta. His mother’s biggest fear was that rap would lead her son down the wrong road, but Playy was determined to make a success of music, motivated by seeing other rappers, like Lil Flip, from the Houston area doing well. Undeniable talent led to Playy being discovered by the legendary Suzanne De Passe of Jackson 5/Motown fame and production titan Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins who formed a partnership specifically to put Playy on the map, making him the ‘first rapper’ of their joint venture. Soon afterwards, he was introduced to Jimmy Iovine who was so impressed that he immediately signed him to Interscope Records. Since then he has worked with some of the hottest producers in the industry today, and his song ‘Birthday Dress’ featuring Matthew Koma continues to rack up millions of youtube views.
Although no longer with Interscope, Playy is now fully ready to go global. Through his own love for the game, his experience of writing and recording with A-list artists, along with a relentless drive, ambition and business acumen, Playy has honed his craft, leading to the development of a sound and style of his own, which you feel and hear in full force in his new music.
Playy has eschewed the down-South sound that might be expected of a rapper from Houston, Texas. Instead, influenced by listening to everything he can get his hands on, he now brings a distinct blend of up-tempo singing-style rap fused with pop and EDM. Reminiscent of Flo Rida and Nelly, Playy is set to be next in line to hit the airwaves with his radio-friendly club-bangers. Playy aims to give his fans – especially the ladies – a good time, making sure they feel good and have high energy music they can get turned up to.
Most certainly this is music with commercial, global appeal.
